The Dhaka National Medical College carries on the legacy of its illustrious predecessor, the Dhaka National Medical Institute, which was founded in 1925 as part of the Indian Sub-Continent’s non-cooperation movement against British colonial rule, organized jointly by the Indian National Congress and the Indian Muslim League under the Leadership of Mahatma Gandhi, Mawlana Muhammad Ali, and Mawlana Sawkat Ali.
The Non-Cooperation movement urged the people of the sub-continent to boycott educational institutions founded and run by the British government along with other campaigns. and to create National Schools, Colleges, and Institutes for the local population to educate themselves in modern science. To that end, two medical schools were founded in the province of Bengal to train national physicians in contemporary medicine. Two such medical schools exist: the Dhaka National Medical Institute in Dhaka and the Calcutta National Medical Institute in Calcutta.
